Narita Gion Festival

Narita airport being a long and expensive journey from central Tokyo, it didn't seem worth spending hours on a train just to get to Tokyo station or Shinjuku during my 18-hour stay in the country. The one-night stopover seemed to have considerable potential for boredom - until, that is, I discovered that the 11th of July is the last day of the Narita Gion Festival.
Portable shrines are pulled through the streets to Shinshouji Temple.
The whole town takes part in the procession.
The shrines arrive in Shinshouji with great fanfare.
