Henan Province

29th - 31st January 2003

We popped in to visit Liu Shaoqi in Kaifang, but he wasn't in.
The Iron Pagoda in Kaifeng. We payed the entrance fee and climbed all the way to the top, expecting some great reward, but in fact the tiny staircase just ends with an even tinier window to look out of. Nice view though.
The Longmen Grottoes were truly amazing, and definitely enough to make a visit to Henan worthwhile. Although we had been wary of going in winter, it turned out to be the perfect time to go; not only did we avoid the Chinese tour groups, but the softly falling snow lent the grottos an air of romance.
The stone carved Buddhas range in size from these few-inch high ones...
...to the giant towering monuments for which the Grottoes are so famous.
The 'Museum of Ancient Tombs' was interesting, although we were often left wondering exactly what it was we were supposed to be looking at (or for!); lots of the tombs seemed to be completely devoid of content and interest, though a few such as this one had interesting relics.
